Sewer Line Problems with Video Camera Inspection

Our camera inspection services provide a live view inside accessible drain and sewer pipes. A technician guides a waterproof camera through an appropriate access point and watches the video feed for buildup, roots, obstructions, damaged joints, and other visible conditions.
A sewer video inspection can support diagnosis before cleaning, help explain why a problem keeps returning, and reduce guesswork when the next step is unclear. We match the inspection to the reported symptoms, pipe access, and condition of the line.

What Is a Sewer Camera Inspection?

A sewer camera inspection uses a small waterproof camera attached to a flexible cable. As the camera moves through the pipe, the technician reviews the interior of the line in real time. This service may also be called a sewer scope inspection, sewer line camera inspection, pipe camera inspection, or video pipe inspection.
The inspection shows visible conditions inside the pipe. It does not clean the line, repair damage, or guarantee the remaining life of the system. This form of underground pipe inspection applies to accessible drain and sewer lines, not every utility pipe beneath a property.

When Is a Camera Inspection Recommended?

A plumbing camera inspection can help when symptoms point to a deeper issue or when previous cleaning did not solve the problem for long. It may also support service planning before hydro jetting, repeated drain cleaning, maintenance work, or repair evaluation.
The camera must have enough access and space to move through the line. A complete blockage, standing waste, tight fitting, or damaged section may prevent the camera from reaching the area until the line receives another service.

Signs You May Need a Sewer Camera Inspection

A slow drain does not always require a camera. Repeated, widespread, or unexplained symptoms make inspection more useful because they can point to a problem beyond the affected fixture.
These signs can have several causes. The inspection helps narrow the possibilities, but the technician may need to clear the line first or combine the camera findings with other service information.

Problems a Sewer Camera Inspection Can Identify

A camera inspection helps identify visible conditions rather than relying only on surface symptoms. The findings can show why a line drains poorly, why a blockage returns, or why a cleaning method may not be enough.
Recurring Blockages
01

Recurring Blockages and Backups

A clogged drain camera inspection may reveal a concentrated obstruction, accumulated waste, grease, scale, or a rough pipe surface that catches material. A main sewer line inspection can also show where flow narrows or where repeated backups begin. The camera does not always identify the exact material inside a dense blockage. It does show its visible location and shape, which helps the technician choose a practical next step.

Tree Root Intrusion
02

Tree Root Intrusion and Heavy Buildup

Roots can enter through cracks, separated joints, or other openings. A tree root sewer inspection can show visible root growth and the section of line it affects. The camera may also reveal grease, sludge, mineral scale, or other buildup that reduces the usable pipe opening. Removing roots or buildup does not repair the point of entry or the underlying pipe condition. We explain that distinction so property owners can separate immediate flow restoration from longer term repair planning.

Cracks and Damage
03

Cracks, Damage, and Misaligned Connections

A broken sewer pipe inspection may reveal visible cracks, missing sections, corrosion, separated joints, offset connections, or a collapsed area that blocks camera travel. The camera may also show standing water that suggests a low area, although the image alone may not confirm the exact grade or cause. When the line shows structural concerns, cleaning may provide limited or temporary improvement. We explain what appears on the video and recommend further evaluation when the condition falls outside routine drain cleaning.

Residential and Commercial Camera Inspection

Residential Sewer Camera Inspection
01

Residential Sewer Camera Inspection

Residential sewer camera inspection can help homeowners investigate recurring kitchen clogs, repeated toilet backups, slow fixtures throughout the house, and concerns about a main sewer line. A drain video inspection may also help before cleaning when the obstruction or pipe condition remains uncertain. A home sewer line inspection can provide useful visual information before a repair, renovation, or property decision. The available view depends on access, line condition, and whether the camera can move past buildup or a blockage.

Commercial Sewer Camera Inspection
02

Commercial Sewer Camera Inspection

Commercial drain and sewer systems often handle greater volume and more frequent use. Restaurants, apartment properties, offices, retail spaces, and managed facilities may use camera inspection to investigate recurring backups, grease accumulation, damaged lines, or unexplained drainage problems. Businesses that need broader support can also review our commercial sewer and drain services. Camera findings can help coordinate cleaning, maintenance, and repair planning while reducing unnecessary disruption.

Book Service →
Inspection for Maintenance Planning
03

Inspection for Maintenance Planning

Camera inspection can support maintenance decisions by showing whether an accessible line contains recurring buildup or visible deterioration. Properties with predictable grease, sludge, or scale may benefit from a tailored preventative drain maintenance plan based on actual system use and service history. Inspection frequency should match the property and the problem. A home with no recurring symptoms may not need routine camera work, while a high use commercial system may need more frequent evaluation.

Drain Blocked? Sewer Backing Up?

Don’t wait. Every minute of a blocked sewer causes more damage and mess. Our Manchester-area technicians are on standby right now — available nights, weekends, and holidays at no extra call-out fee.

Camera Inspection Before Drain or Sewer Cleaning

A camera inspection can help choose the right cleaning method when the cause, location, or pipe condition remains unclear. A localized obstruction may call for professional drain snaking, while widespread grease, sludge, or scale may make professional hydro jetting more appropriate for a suitable line. The inspection does not mean the most aggressive service is always necessary. We use the visible conditions, symptoms, and service history to recommend the least disruptive method that addresses the actual problem.

What a Camera Inspection Can and Cannot Identify

A camera can show many visible interior conditions, including roots, buildup, obstructions, cracks, corrosion, separated joints, and standing water. It can also show whether the camera stops at a collapsed section or a blockage that fills the pipe.
The inspection cannot see through solid debris, heavy wastewater, or the pipe wall. It cannot independently confirm soil conditions, every underground leak, exact pipe grade, or the future service life of the line. It also cannot replace cleaning when material blocks the view or repair evaluation when the pipe shows structural damage.
These limits matter. A reliable inspection explanation should distinguish between what the camera clearly shows, what the images suggest, and what requires another test or service.

How Much Does a Sewer Camera Inspection Cost?

Sewer camera inspection cost depends on the line, access, and work required to obtain a useful view. A short accessible drain differs from a long main sewer line with standing waste, difficult access, or a blockage that prevents camera travel.

Getting an Accurate Service Estimate

Tell us which fixtures are affected, how long the problem has occurred, and what cleaning or repair the line has received before. We can then determine whether a camera inspection is the right first step and explain the expected service scope. We do not recommend publishing a fixed sewer line inspection cost without confirming the actual system. Clear pricing should reflect access, line condition, and the work needed to complete a useful inspection.

I’m a local pool business owner with over 25 years of experience in the industry and was recommended to top dog to possibly find a leak in underground pool lines. Charlie came out to the first job, was super nice, however, had a hard time finding the pipes underground when we finally started digging the pipes where he said the crack was possibly located. After tearing up the lawn, the pipes were actually not where he said they were, and there was no crack in the pipes that ended up being in the static drain and a green pool we couldnt dive. Paid this invoice with no questions although it did raise some eyebrows, but I did give them another chance. Later this summer, I had them do the same thing at a pool in Bedford, The tech called me on site saying he was extremely new and “thought” he could check. He was there for 20 minutes and said there was nothing he could do because of 90s underground, (Which they DO state if they hit, they cannot go around two or more.) Upon digging up of that line, The break was 2 feet behind the return in the shallow end with no 90s. They are now trying to charge me $400 for the tech being in there for 20 minutes and not being able to find a leak foot behind the return. I don’t know how they are with sewer work, but I cannot warn people enough that they have absolutely no clue what they’re doing with pools. Another company came out pressurized/check the lines And charged the same price to actually find the issue. Disappointed is an understatement

We had root intrusion in our sewer line near our property in Derry. Top Dog did a camera inspection, showed us exactly where the blockage was, and hydro-jetted it clean. Outstanding service and fair pricing.

As a restaurant owner on South Willow Street, grease buildup in our drains is constant. Top Dog does our quarterly jetting maintenance and we've had zero drain emergencies since. Worth every penny!

Frequently Asked Questions About Sewer Camera Inspection

A sewer camera inspection can show visible roots, buildup, obstructions, corrosion, cracks, separated joints, offset connections, standing water, and collapsed areas that stop camera travel. The view depends on access and whether the camera can move through the line.
Yes. A camera can show visible root growth inside an accessible sewer line and the section it affects. The inspection cannot show the full root system outside the pipe or repair the opening where the roots entered.
Not always. The camera may pass through a line with enough open space and a clear view. A dense blockage, heavy waste, grease, or standing water may prevent useful inspection until the line receives snaking, jetting, or another cleaning service.
It can reveal visible cracks, separated joints, missing sections, corrosion, or a collapsed area. The camera cannot evaluate every condition outside the pipe or guarantee the full structural condition of sections it cannot reach or see clearly.
Inspection time depends on access, line length, pipe condition, and whether a blockage limits camera travel. A straightforward residential line may require less time than a large commercial system or a line that needs cleaning first.
The technician can explain the visible findings from the camera feed. Ask when scheduling whether recorded footage, images, or other documentation form part of the service because available deliverables can vary by equipment and job scope.
Drain camera inspection cost varies with access, pipe length, number of lines, blockage severity, and whether cleaning is needed before the camera can pass. An accurate estimate should reflect the actual service scope rather than a generic price.
